Background
The CB1 cannabinoid receptor is expressed primarily in brain and is a target for cannabinoids (Matsuda et al., 1990, Gerard et al., 1991), the psychoactive ingredients of marijuana. Other members of the cannabinoid family of receptors include the CB2 cannabinoid receptor, which is expressed primarily in the periphery, and GPR55 (Ryberg, 2007). When activated, the CB1 receptor inhibits adenylate cyclase through Gi. The CB1 receptor plays a significant role in modulation of food intake (Cota, 2007).
