Background
Nicotinic receptors constitute a family of ligand-gated ion channels permeable to Na+, K+ and Ca2+. They are composed of various permutations of 10 different alpha subunits and four different beta subunits. The predominant forms of nicotinic receptor in brain are α4β2 and α7. The α3β4 form is a neuronal form that is insensitive to α-bungarotoxin.
