Background
This receptor belongs to a group of 4 sensory neuron-specific G-protein coupled receptors that are expressed solely in small diameter primary sensory neurons. MRGX1 (MAS-related GPR-X1), also known as SNSR4 (sensory neuron-specific G-protein-coupled receptor 4), is potently activated by BAM22 which evokes a large rise in intracellular calcium. Because of their very selective expression pattern in sensory neurons and because these sensory neurons transmit pain, these receptors are of interest as therapeutic targets for the development of pain medications.
